WHM On-Screen: Deadpool

On this episode of WHM On-Screen, Andrew and Steve sit down to chat about the mega-success that is Deadpool. Throughout the talk, the two give their complaints & grievances with the film, and also mention what they really liked about it. Not shockingly, Steve is knowledgeable and informed about the character and where he comes from, while Andrew is ignorant and doing his best to keep up. PLUS: Lots and lots and lots of X-Men talk. So much so that they watched an X-Men movie right after recording.

Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein, Brianna Hildebrand, T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, Leslie Uggams, and Stefan Kapicic as the voice of the poorly used Colossus; directed by Tim Miller.

Did this movie finally break the Ryan Reynolds Box Office Poison curse?

It was a watchable enough movie, not really up to the standards set by Guardians of the Galaxy or anything, but a decent little movie.

Deadpool's quips run pretty hot and cold though. For the most part he sounds like he's doing voice-over work for an obnoxious, wisecracking video game character. Everytime he's costumed I pictured Ryan Reynolds sitting in a dark studio booth reading lines instead of believing what I was seeing on screen. He was much better in the origin story parts leading up to his becoming Deadpool.

Also, I'm glad this movie is being hyped to be better than it truly is, and that it's making bank. Hopefully it will show studios that R-rated comic book movies are not anathema to box office success, no matter how much the Punisher series of flops wants to prove otherwise.

I knew very little about Deadpool going into this movie and ended up loving the film, easily one of the best comic book movies ever.

X-Men: The Last Stand, however, stands as one of the very worst comic book flicks ever so I'm really looking forward to you ripping on it this summer!

Gambit WILL suck balls because of Channing Tatum. Mark my words.

I really enjoyed this. Fourth Wall Breaking really still usually does it for me, and here it was done with aplomb. And Ryan Reynolds is so perfect, they cast him twice...once with his mouth unsown.
It s a very good movie.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead does not sound like a character's name. It sounds like an all girl punk band from the 90s. Ya know, GRRRRRRRL...

Great review guys.

I really liked this, but you're right, he can't be in an X-Men world because he would have to reference Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard. But they also referenced the lack of other X-Men because the studio could only afford two. I think this got the tone just right, and Reynolds is a funny fucker when he is given the room to be funny. And of course T.J Miller is almost always the funniest part of anything he's in.
