Episode 58 - Undercover Blues

In this week's episode, the gang goes undercover with Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner in the super-spy super-flop, Undercover Blues! Can Dennis Quaid stop smiling for two seconds? Why are there so many Stanley Tucci scenes if he's not the main villain? Plus, does a blowjob joke belong in a family-ish film? Short answer? No.

Undercover Blues stars Kathleen Turner, Dennis Quaid, Stanley Tucci, Fiona Shaw, Larry Miller, Obba Babatundé, and Richard Jenkins; directed by Herbert Ross.

Ian Abrams was my screenwriting professor at film school. To his credit, he was always very self-effacing about his time in Hollywood and his reputation therein (he primarily worked on uncredited re-writes and projects that never made it into production). In general he was an engaging teacher and very smart in regards to writing and screen comedy. But man, was it apparent the bitterness he felt toward the industry, especially in regards to this project. He seemed to very much hold Ross and the studio responsible for the film's failings.

Eventually he just threw his arms up and had to leave the industry, taking his Early Edition residuals and setting up shop in Philadelphia.
